As a Bristol Osteopath, I am often asked by patients about the link between poor posture and back pain. They are inexorably linked.
Back pain is a significant problem in Bristol and indeed the wider world, and daily I treat patients with posture-related back pain.
According to the NHS back pain is the largest single cause of disability in the UK, with lower back pain accounting for 11% of the total disability of the UK population at any one time.
The average British person now spends more than six hours per day on a laptop or computer, often in poor postures increasing the incidence of low back pain and injury.
In one survey I was reading, 73% of those questioned were unhappy with their posture and the way they sit.
The results of poor posture include low back pain, disc injury, joint degeneration/arthritis, and higher up, shoulder and neck issues and headaches.
One of the most effective ways to combat poor posture and potential back pain issues is to address your sitting position by using ergonomic seating. I advise my patients to sit better and move more.
I recently wrote in another article about the unique ergonomic chair The Z Chair that I have developed, designed and launched across the UK.
The ergonomic Z Chair is designed to change how we think about sitting and promote better posture naturally. By tackling poor posture, the Z Chair can help to improve spinal health and prevent back pain.
