Tips from Bristol osteopathy clinic on how to prevent sporting injuries

Patients often come to my Bristol osteopathy clinic asking for tips on how to prevent sporting injuries. As an active sportsman myself, I am keen to advise and assist.

Sports injuries are not just painful, but a real annoyance for sports people as they prevent them from pursuing what they love to do. It is so frustrating being unable to attain our sporting goals in activities and events in Bristol and beyond.

Patients visiting my Bristol osteopathy clinic (in Henleaze) who engage in sporting activities also usually take an active interest in their overall body health. However, they sometimes need a bit more direction and focus.

In my experience as a leading Osteopath treating active patients from Henleaze, Cotham, Redland, Clifton, Sneyd Park, Westbury on Trym and beyond, I find that most sporting injuries are preventable.

Sporting injuries generally occur because patients are doing one or more of the following:

-Overtraining

-Inappropriate training

-Poor body maintenance (lack of core stability and flexibility)

-Insufficient rest and recovery

-Poor hydration strategies during and after exercise

To prevent sporting injuries, my top tips would be:

-Follow a sensible and realistic training plan

-Build up slowly, whatever the sporting discipline

-Prioritise core stability and body conditioning (core/stability exercises and flexibility work such as stretching, muscle rolling, pilates, and yoga)

-Regular sports massages

-Maintenance osteopathic prevention body work (service the body as you would the car)

-Rehydrate well during and after exercise and use electrolyte replacement supplements.

-Rest – this is the most important part of any activity plan for sports people, to give the body the chance to properly and fully recover.

-Train smart. Rest smart. Drink smart.
