One of Bristol's best osteopaths shares tips for avoiding common Autumn injuries

Whilst it may not feel like a change of season is due just yet, a few of my patients have asked if I'll write a blog post as one of Bristol's best osteopaths sharing my tips for avoiding common Autumn injuries.

A change in season usually brings with it a change in activities for most people. Some will become more active, some less so.

It is important with Autumn bringing colder, wetter and damper weather conditions to stay safe and healthy when exercising and moving around.

Some of my top tips as one of Bristol's best osteopaths for avoiding injuries this Autumn include:

Try Gentle Exercise

Regular moderate, low-impact and physical exercise (such as walking, cycling, swimming, gym, and exercise classes) are an ideal way to gently keep the body and mind healthy during the Autumn months.

Check out the benefits of Gentle Exercise here.

Keep it consistent

Maintaining the same exercise programme is important in Autumn. No sudden stops if winding down when exercising, as well as no big increases in volume or intensity of exercise. This includes all sports, the gym, walking, Pilates, yoga, gardening or any form of indoor and outdoor physical exercise.

Stay warm

As Autumnal days get cooler, warm up gently and warm down gently after exercising. Also keep the body warm when doing other forms of physical activity such as gardening or walking. Keep limbs, joints and muscles warm.

Eat well & stay hydrated

The body works best when it is well fed and watered, just like your garden. Take the same level of care of your body as you would of your garden, and utilise the very best seasonal produce during Autumn to stay healthy.

Focus on your Core

building up basic core strength is one of the main ways to avoid Autumn injuries. Working on your fitness, stability and flexibility is vital. Try Pilates, Yoga and core straight work. I see so many injuries at my Bristol osteopathy clinic resulting directly from poor stability or limited flexibility.

Give your body an MOT

We give our cars and annual check-over in the form of an MOT, so why not give your body the same this Autumn? I offer patients an Maintenance Osteopathic Treatment (MOT) service which can help to reduce and prevent injuries.
