Osteopath in BS6, Bristol gives advice on how to prevent injuries this Spring

Having worked as an Osteopath in BS6, Bristol for many years, I often see client asking for advice on how to prevent injuries in Spring.

The change of seasons can be a time when people start exercising more and are more active in general. They get out and about and exert themselves.

This can lead to a rise in injuries caused by over training, strains, trips and falls.

There are several suggestions I give to my patients to help reduce the chance of Spring injuries.

My advice to patients to minimise injury risk in Spring includes:

- Build up exercise gradually, and make it appropriate to your level of fitness

- Don't overtrain. Keep your Spring exercise regime moderate to begin with

- Warm up, and ensure that you do gentle stretches and warm down after

- Work on your flexibility and core stability to help reduce the risk of injuries

- Rest and recover after any form of exercise in Spring

- Check that the kit you have is still operational since last year, particularly for running shoes and the maintenance of bikes

- Stay hydrated during Spring exercising, as well as rehydrating afterwards at home

- Nutrition is important for both exercise performance and injury prevention. Get advice if you’re not sure

- Follow a structured and realistic training plan for all your Spring activities

- Consider booking in for regular Sports Massage treatments with my colleagues at Active8 Health & Fitness

- Prevent niggling injuries with Osteopathic Maintenance Treatments

- If you do sustain an injury, stop, rest, and get it assessed and treated rapidly

- Train smart, rest smart, hydrate smart, and enjoy the Spring season safely

Spring can be a time when many people re-engage with sporting activities after a break during the Winter. Injuries can happen easily so restart slowly.
