Dealing with back pain problems in Bristol after six months of Covid-19

Since lockdown in March, and then six months of Covid-19, many patients have come to my Henleaze osteopathy clinic with queries on dealing with back pain problems in Bristol.

The rapid change of lifestyle brought about by Covid-19 has affected all of us, but some more than others, with common changes including less commuting, sitting for longer, and not sitting well. I’ve seen a rapid increase in lower back pain, neck issues, and more RSI (repetitive strain injuries).

Some of the basic tips I give patients are to stand up more, consider a standing desk where possible, aim to make your work space more ergonomic, by adjusting your desk and chair. It’s also really important to take “micro” breaks every 20 minutes. This gives your back, eyes, and brain a brief rest. Stand up and move around for 30-60 seconds, it will reduce pain and make you more productive.

Drink plenty of water. It’s so important to drink regularly through the day, and also take a bit of time for some gentle stretching exercises and and a walk (or other exercise).

When working at home because of Covid-19, I advise patients to take breaks from their home office environment, and to ensure that they are protecting their mental health as well as physical wellbeing.

Back pain problems might be due to a specific injury or a sustained strain from a suboptimal work environment. Working at home during the Covid-19 pandemic has proved a real challenge for us all, so if you are struggling and in pain, it’s important to book in to get it resolved.

With straightforward issues, a neck or back pain problem might be sorted out in a few treatment sessions. I sometimes advise that patients take maintenance treatments. These aim to prevent issues building up or prevent a reoccurence of an issue. Maintenance treatments might be monthly, quarterly, or yearly, depending on each patient’s needs.

I’m a huge advocate of the ‘prevention is better than cure’ message, and recommend that patients regularly review their back and neck health.

Maintenance treatments can be a really effective way to maintain good back and neck health throughout the year – to book an online-based consultation with me, please visit here.
