My Henleaze clinic is getting more queries from patients on how to avoid injuries in Spring while outdoors in Bristol.
Spring is when more of us start to get active, get outdoors, get engaged with sporting activities, and do more physical things such as walking, gardening and higher-impact sports.
This also means that the opportunities for injuries rise in Spring across Bristol.
As an experienced Bristol Osteopath, I'm used to treating patients with seasonally-based injuries, and Spring is a time of the year when patients often experience issues.
To help avoid injuries in Spring when you're out and about in Bristol, I recommend that patients follow this advice to reduce the risks of sustaining injuries:
Hydrate all day
The body needs water regardless of the activities you are undertaking, and in Spring hydration is vitally important for the overall health of muscles, joints and ligaments.
The need for regular hydration increases the more we move. It seems obvious, but many people do not drink enough water when exercising, walking, and gardening which leaves the body dehydrated and more susceptible to sustaining injuries.
Stretch and stay supple
Flexibility is key to reducing the risk of injuries in Spring in Bristol.
Stretching and taking micro-breaks are essential - find out more here.
The more fluid and mobile the body is, the less chance there is of being injured.
Watch your sitting posture
One of the major causes of injuries that I treat in patients across Bristol results from poor sitting posture. It is a major factor in back, neck and spinal injuries for patients. This can then directly impact your ability to do the activities you enjoy.
I am passionate about promoting better posture, and as a result developed and launched a specialist ergonomic seat called The Z Chair to help address this problem for patients, and keep the body healthier.

See a professional
Some patients come to me with a pre-existing niggle, ache or injury in Spring.
I recommend that if you have a niggling injury that comes and goes, see a professional to get it checked over thoroughly. A good Bristol Osteopath will be able to help.
Many of my patients book in with me for an annual MOT - a Maintenance Osteopathic Treatment. This helps them to stay injury-free. Find out more here.
I also recommend that you read these hints and tips on how to maintain the best physical and mental health during Spring and into the Summer months.
