How to prevent and manage knee injuries in Bristol

As many people get far more active in the Summer, it can also lead to any increase of queries on how to prevent and manage knee injuries in Bristol.

Knee injuries can be extremely painful, as well as preventing patients from enjoying full movement and being able to manage daily activities.

As an experienced Bristol osteopath, I treat a variety of knee injuries at my Henleaze osteopathy clinic, and am always happy to provide advice to my patients when it comes to preventing and managing knee injuries.

A patient kindly highlighted their experience of having a knee injury treated at my Bristol osteopathy clinic - read all about it here.

Preventing knee injuries and rehabilitating knee injuries usually involves two common elements, namely:

* Improving or maintaining knee mobility

* Building strength and stability in the knee

Much of the knee's stability depends on the leg muscles, especially Quadriceps muscles.

By building up strength and stability (and proprioception) in the legs, knee health can be optimised as well as reducing the chance of previous knee injuries returning.

This is an important consideration in preventing knee injuries as well as building up knee strength and stability following an injury.

Although a percentage of knee injuries can be prevented using these methods and treatments, wear and tear in the form of arthritis can be a common issue in the knees of older patients.

Building stability and strength can help improve the function of even a worn knee.

Some patients, however, may eventually need surgical intervention, but rehabilitation (and prehab- before the op) treatments to improve mobility and knee stabilisation will ensure a better outcome following knee surgery.

Many knee injuries recover exceptionally well with manual treatment and  exercises delivered by a qualified Bristol osteopath. The key to quick recovery is exercise to help strengthen and stabilise the knee.

One thing I cannot stress highly enough is balance (proprioception).

This is the key to knee stability, and I often give patients simple balance exercises such as standing on one leg.

This is a superb way to improve knee stability and can help to prevent future injuries and wear and tear.

Knee health can also be improved by ensuring other parts of the body are in good health including the feet, hips, pelvis and lower back. Full body health is very important.

My osteopathic approach to knee injuries in Bristol involves treatment and rehabilitation of the knee, but also a thorough assessment and treatment of other body areas, and where required a holistic treatment for each individual.

When the whole body is balanced, injuries can be minimised whilst body movement is enhanced along with risk reduction of future injury.
