With the current onset of more disruption across the city from Covid-19 restrictions being in place, I thought it would be useful to write a news post on how Bristol homeworkers can reduce back pain in 2021 lockdown scenarios.
With the changes in working practices brought about by Covid-19 during 2020, and many more Bristol homeworkers, I'm now seeing the emergence of back pain, neck pain, and other associated issues from poor posture, it’s really important to monitor and manage back pain when working at home.
Some of the best ways to reduce back pain when working at home during lockdown can include:
Do a posture check – The way in which we sit (and stand) has a huge impact on maintaining good back health. The spine to be ‘neutral’ to stay in good condition, by this I mean the natural curves of the spine should be maintained while we sit, the back is then less likely to suffer from postural strains.
Maintain physical activity – Lack of movement and exercise whilst spending longer hours working from home can cause short-term and long-term damage to the back. Walking, running, yoga, cycling and pilates are all good examples of low-impact exercise that can be utilized during lockdown for back health and mobility.
‘Movement is health’ so stand up and move regularly – sitting down for long periods when working from home can be a major detrimental factor in poor back health. Taking micro breaks (standing up and moving for 60 seconds every 20 minutes) is a good way to combat this. You could also consider working at a standing desk instead.
Hydrate – drinking water throughout the day when working from home is critical in helping maintain back and overall body health. Good hydration helps the joints, ligaments and muscles in the back to stay healthy.
Prevention is better than cure – utilizing preventative osteopathic treatments can be a good way of improving and maintaining good back health when working from home during lockdown.
