Lawn bowls are an increasingly popular pastime across the city, particularly among the older generations. I saw a patient recently who asked me: Where can I get treatment for bowling injuries in Bristol.
The team at Alex Prince Osteopathy based in BS6 are here to keep lawn bowling enthusiasts active and playing throughout the season.
Felix and I (Alex) are osteopaths based at our Henleaze clinic in Bristol. We’ve both been treating a number of lawn bowling enthusiasts suffering from ailments that were affecting their ability to bowl.
Most lawn bowls players we see are retired and usually over 60, but we do see some younger lawn bowlers. No matter what age we want to keep players active, healthy and doing what they love.
What bowling injuries tend to affect our Bristol-based bowling community?
Actually, it’s not usually lawn bowls in itself that cause an injury.
Often patients report difficulty in continuing their bowling due to something that happened elsewhere, maybe at home or at work. Problem areas include:
Back pain and stiffness - To accurately and effectively deliver a bowl down the lawn the bowler needs to be able to bend.
At Alex Prince Osteopathy we diagnose and treat all sorts of patients with low back issues, some with mild wear and tear and often those with arthritic backs. They nearly all respond well to osteopathic treatment.
We aim to reduce pain, restore flexibility and improve low back function. Our aim; to get patients back to bowling as soon as possible.
Knees - Knee injuries, or sometimes a creaky, ageing, arthritic knee can prevent lawn bowlers from getting into their bowling position.
Mobility and stability in the knees are important to the lawn bowler.
Our aim as experienced osteopaths in Bristol is to improve knee health so that a patient can deliver that bowl.
Arthritis - at our Henleaze clinic we appreciate that ‘wear and tear’ or arthritis in the active older person can be a major hurdle to staying active.
Although we can’t help everyone, our holistic approach is to promote health in all joints and maximize mobility even in worn joints, enabling lawn bowling players of all ages to stay active for as long as possible.
